A Guide to the New Features of the Local 1212 Site
From the very beginning of the project to redesign our website
our goal was to provide a dynamic, state of the art site for our members and prospective members. To function as an always dependable location ready for you to access information, resources and assistance from your union. We feel we've given you a website that will provide just that. This initial presentation of our goal is just the first step in our program for an ever expanding site tailored for the needs of our members.
To accomplish this we need your help and input. Considerable thought and planning went into designing a site in which members can participate. We not only welcome but urge members to submit items for posting on this site which belongs to all of us.
Some examples of items from members are, but not limited to, photo albums, links to member’s sites or sites you feel would be of interest to others. Articles written by members for members would be an excellent submission.
These are just a few examples, if you have an idea let us know. For more information on submitting material for posting on our website use the form on the “Contact Us” page.
Now for a brief description of some of the new features our site now offers.
- A current sitemap for reference.
- We now have a companion blog for the main site. News items of various types but of interest to our members will be posted here. Also there will be pages of information added that while useful would not quite fit into our regular site.
-
Related to our blog you will find, on the homepage and many others in the site, section below that page’s content titled “Local 1212 News Headlines”. This box is linked to the news items added to the blog. It will display the five most recent news items the local has posted. The entire list of news items will be on the blog. You can also receive an RSS feed of these new items for your RSS capable newsreader.
The office will also use this section for important, up to the minute information updates and alerts for members from the Business Manager.
These items will be updated frequently so check back often. - The section just below the “Local 1212 News Headlines” is a similar feed from the AFL-CIO blog.
-
Sign up for email notices from the local. To enter your email address to the list use the form at the top of the right side bar that appears in each page. After signing up you will receive a confirmation message sent to the email address you used to subscribe. You must confirm your joining the list by clicking the link in that message. You will then receive emails from the office. The list of subscribers is secured and never passed on.
You may unsubscribe at anytime using the same form and checking the appropriate option. Also there is an unsubscribe link in each email you receive. We expect this to be a very low volume mailing list. - A new feature we feel will be of value is our “Job Resources” page. We expect it to expand with time to include jobs available from the local’s shops. On this issue a very worthwhile addition to the IBEW main office site is the “Broadcast and Recording - My Skills”. On it any member who works in any Broadcast and Recording related fields may post their “Current Skills” online at that site. The purpose of this project is “The IBEW International Office wishes to ensure that when our signatory employers contact us about an employment opportunity, we are able to fill their specialized needs anywhere in the country.”
- Clicking on the “Calendar” in the left side bar will open a full version which will display any special dates of which the members should be aware.
- The site search function is not yet in service. We hope to have it running soon.
- Another new section of our site contains pages relating to information on all facets of unions. On the "Union Resources Main Page" you will find links to our site’s pages. Also included in these are several pages, which will be updated weekly with new information. These specific pages are ‘This Week in Labor History”, “Member Tips”, “Shop Steward Tips”, “The Labor Cartoon of the Week” and “The Labor Joke of the Week”.
- There is a section called “Photo Albums” for collections of photos relating to our local. At the moment there is only one album, however we will be adding more in the future. We ask members to submit their photos to be included in future albums. See the “Photo Albums” page for more information.
- On the “Contact Us” page you will find a convenient form for you use in sending a message to the local office. This one form is all you need to submit your message to any department or person at the office.
Remember this is every member’s site and your input will help it grow to fill our needs now and in the future.
